Independence Day, 1956: A Fairy Tale
I chose to write about Independence Day, 1956: A Fairy Tale. There is so much irony in the title as noted as a Fairy Tale when clearly it is about a young boy that feels lost in his house. He uses the metaphor of his house to show that he is beneath his parents in the basement. Watching the relationship that his parents have with each other. The mother is so distraught that she cleans parts of the house that are already clean. The father plays with a gun and many different things that would easily light the house on fire. I took this as his father doing things to fuel the fire in the house and with this relationship with his wife. The father does things that don't help the situation and just make things work while the mother does things that are familiar to her. There is great poignancy in this poem. The description of the house and the gun makes you feel for the child that feels unwanted in his own home.
